Live a Lie

Posted in zero thoughts by moyism on June 18th, 2006

Random thoughts of consciousness coupled with silly attempts at humor plague this entry on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode 12, “Live a Live” . Readers may want to instead check out Garten’s review, Zyl’s review, the novel chapter, Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsumeawase, or Aya Hirano’s “God Knows” to keep theirselves better entertained. Warning, 163 screencaps and sexual innuendoes abound!

Prelude of Freedom
North High School festival kicks into full gear with the usual assortment of activities one would expect. Underaged porn, crappy home made video games, HARD GAY (hooo~!), useless fortunes, and enough young looking harem girls to make any male cry. Just the typical school activities that make up Kyon’s life as he ventures his way to Mikuru’s class’s cosplay “massage” stall with a 30% off coupon for his first five minute “massage.”

Tease of the Year
Tsuruya, already the #1 Hostress in Mikuru’s and her class, greet all incoming saps potatoes customers as they paw off their latest Ohno PVC for five minutes of fake happiness. Kyon and friends included. At least Tsuruya gives the guys some fanservice ala SHUFFLE!, giving Kunikida and Kuniguchi a lot of “image training” material for the night. Strangely, Kyon is immuned to Tsuruya’s fanservice attempts as a strange sense of deja vu kept hammering the back of his mind; a previous life experience perhaps?

For 500yen all I got was blue balled and some horrible noodles!
Kunikida and Kuniguchi pretty much bust a nut once they lay their eyes on cafe waitress Mikuru. Wisely, Kyon takes full leering advantage of his closer proximity to Mikuru’s fine assets while praising the individual(s) who(m) made the costumes. After a round of cheap food, begging Tsuruya and Mikuru for more fanservice, and almost joining the MMM (Moe Moe Mikuru) Club Kyon and co head off their separate ways. In reality, Kunikida and Kuniguchi go to do some quick “image training” while Kyon devises a plan for a Mikuru-Kyon-Tsuruya sandwich with a side of Yuki and Haruhi for dessert.

Spotting Aya Hirano’s Artistic Talents
… or not. Kyon instead realizes Aya Hirano’s onigiri-cat-like drawings that plague the school are similar to ones in the Da Vinci Code and stealthy starts his search for the Holy Grail. Seven minutes later Kyon gives up, realizing the noodles from before were doing something funky to his brain processes. And that’s why his little sister told him to lay off the mayo-on-everything diet!

BECK this is not
Thinking over his sister’s advice, Kyon heads to the school’s “THE LIVE” music concert hoping to score with some groupies. Unlike BECK and NANA, the only groupies Kyon score with are some heavy metal fans; at least Kyon keeps his options open unknowingly making Itsuki very very happy. Debating whether or not to hook up with the guy in the red muscle shirt Kyon does the #1 Wrong Thing any male lead shouldn’t do: believe normality is slowly returning for him.

This is a sci-fi drama love comedy right?
No amount of moyism branded innuendoes can describe the pure awesomeness of this scene. Just watch the video (28MB at 2:39 minutes long).

This is a sci-fi drama love comedy, damn it!
Kyon and Itsuki have come to mutual agreement of the following while watching:
1. Hot and sweaty bunny suit wearing Haruhi FTW.
2. Mizuki, the drummer girl with the choker, must join SOS-Dan.
3. Itsuki would allow for a orgy as long as he gets first dibs on Kyon. (Still in debate)
4. Haruhi has to be a screamer and wildcat in bed.
5. Yuki’s “hand” techniques could net her many female admirers.
6. Red muscle shirt from before is actually Itsuki’s dad. Kyon’s a father-con? Go fig.

Senpais FTW
Haruhi becoming humble?! I guess after the 3rd years band members showed Haruhi some of their “techniques”, even she had to admit she’ll be outclassed if they laid their hands on Kyon or Mikuru. Haruhi takes proactive measures to ensure she has marked Kyon as her pet just incase the 3rd years didn’t already know. A eventual deal is worked out where the 3rd years can borrow Yuki in exchange for a once of a month orgy with Kyon and Haruhi. Who gets to go first and the time and place will still need to be decided but Haruhi figures within three months she’ll be able to copy all of ENOZ’s techniques that Kyon will only go to her for pleasure.

… this is when Kuniguchi wakes up from his dream, wondering why Kyon was involved instead of him.

Even if God has her bad days, she still looks adorably cute
The continuation of the dream. I mean, where Haruhi shows that not even God can always have her way. Alternatively, what I believe is Haruhi’s sly way of seducing Kyon further by showing off her cute side by letting the grass get in her face. She probably got pointers from Tamaki and Renge.

Being by Haruhi’s side is a 24/7 job with little benefits
It’s a reverse harem! Instead of the guy confessing to the girl under the legendary school tree, it is reversed where the girl also has to do a mating dance to let all the other females know the male is now taken. Unfortunately this is something Haruhi has just created and thus, no one including Kyon knows what has just taken place.

So my attempt for a Omni style entry has failed miserably. One will probably need to see the episode first before trying to decode my brand of humor for it. Well, if anything else at least viewers have 163 screencaps plus a short video to keep them occupied.

My actual thoughts on the episode? Pure win. “Live a Live” is currently my favorite episode of the series so far, partly because of the concert, but also because we get to see another side of Haruhi rarely if ever seen. It is nice to see Haruhi more normal, however relative that term is, in how even she has her doubts and worries at times. Also the small quiet Haruhi and Kyon moments are great as it proves, behind Haruhi’s zealous personality, she’s just a normal high school girl trying to find her way in life. Just that Haruhi’s way is more unqiue than 99.9% of the population’s.

Personally I prefer the bassist. ;)

I just watched the Haruhi singing video 15 times! Of course, I call it the Yuki playing guitar video. I was hoping she would pull a G&R slash style riff, but sadly they didn’t take it that direction.

Fantastic episode - and a nice review of it - I just found out you’re back to blogging (albeit in ‘redux’ form) - I used your old ‘life line by line’ site regularly. I guess ‘Don’t burn yourself out’ is the rule :)

This series has made me wonder if Kyoto is out simply to lay down some sort of challenge to other studios - their work is so far ahead of them at the moment that KyoAni must be causing a few questions to be asked in boardrooms such as ‘why the hell can’t we do something like this?’. If they are, then they’ve done us all a favour in addition to giving us the most intelligent and entertaining shows in an age.

Babel, I agree with you about KyoAni challenging other studios. AS soon as I finished viewing the whole episode 2 of SHaruhi, I knew that KyoAni was out to stir things up. That is why I made bold statement that SHaruhi, along with FHaruhi, might fundamentally change the how anime would be made and how we would view them.

I’ve decided that I like the singer girl best out of the band, despite not seeing much of her. I took a screenshot of her fsrt time through the raw, without much idea of who she actually was. Dunno what her name is though.. was she the N in ENOZ?
